About Dr. Sean T. Hubbard

From his early years in Cleveland, Ohio through his adolescence and young adult life in Florida, Sean Tomar Hubbard knew he was fascinated with the brain. Voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by his Tallahassee, Florida High School, Sean attended Florida A & M on a scholarship.

Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, the young pre-med student was wooed to work at Pfizer where he researched medication and the neuroscience behind dementia.

After working for Pfizer, Sean attended Nova SouthEastern University in Fort Lauderdale from 1992 through 1997.

While he was interning at UMDMJ, Sean witnessed a situation that solidified his career choice and defined his focus. While accompanying Dr. Donald Barone, Sean was amazed by the senior doctor’s ability to diagnose a patient’s spinal tumor by simply talking with, and examining the patient. There was no MRI, no imaging, simply a series of questions posed to the patient and the patient’s family. Then and there, Hubbard decided he wanted to be a neurologist.

Neurology is like solving a mystery. The ability to tease out the history that defines the illness is a bit like a puzzle. And Hubbard’s gift was to be able to quickly and accurately read the clues that suggest the pattern.

Sean particularly enjoys working with students. In his role within the Kennedy health system, he trains residents and interns. To teach and to share the working understanding of a condition is one of the most rewarding parts of his job.

Even more rewarding, however, is the empowerment he provides to his patients. Not only does he treat the physiological aspects of the situation, Dr. Hubbard also gently works with his clients to an understanding of the emotional implications. .

With his holistic approach, Dr. Hubbard helps his patients achieve a high rate of success and minimize relapse. It’s important to empower the patient to understand not only the root of their condition, but also to give them the tools to manage it. .

Neurology, medicine and psychology all work together to help the patient manage. A surprising effect of this approach is the realization that one develops that he/she can control his/her life. And it’s exciting to help patients discover the healing within and then watch it manifest in other aspects of their lives as well.

“I believe that someone can do well. I am confident that they can. This has an effect on my patient - they know I believe in them and therefore, they believe as well. This is the beginning of healing”.

When not involved in his busy practice, Dr. Hubbard spends his time exercising, studying nutrition and healthy activities. He enjoys being near water, including canoeing, swimming and water sports. On dry land, he gets plenty of fresh air during long walks, running and admiring nature while collecting shells and rocks.

A resident of Haddon Township, Sean has two children, an 11 year old daughter and a 9 year old son. He also has a much larger family of his patients, who may come to the wellness center in search of help, but who graduate from treatment with a new caring bond.

Dr. Sean Hubbard is the Chief of neurology for the Kennedy Health System, and is also the author of two books, “The Wellness Portfolio” and “The Search for Wellness”, both available through Amazon.com.
